Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and when he stumbles do not let your heart rejoice, lest the Lord see it, and be displeased, and turn his wrath away from him. (24:17-18)

This is difficult for many people. When someone hurts us, our natural reaction will be to 1) hurt them back or 2) celebrate if someone else does it for us. The thing we forget is that our enemy is God’s image-bearer, too, and God is concerned with them as he is with us.

This is the Old Testament version of Jesus’ command to love and pray for our enemies (Matthew 5:43-48). God’s desire for us to “love our neighbors” extends to our enemies as well.

Like a kiss on the lips is the one who gives an honest answer. (24:26)
